The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White                                                            book cover

I wanted to read something a little creepy/spooky because it’s almost Halloween, and this book really fulfilled my craving.  We all know the basic story behind Dr. Frankenstein’s monster, this book helps fill in some of the back story and makes you think about what makes monsters, well monsters.  Elizabeth was brought into the Frankenstein home as a playmate to young Victor, and we readers are able to see early warning signs of very...irregular behaviors, however, Elizabeth constantly covers for him because should she fail in normalizing Victor, she may be thrown into the streets.

Once adults, Victor leaves the country to study and stops sending letters, so Elizabeth goes to find him, hoping to find him well.  As she searches, she finds and covers up creepy experiments.  Towards the end of the book we, and Elizabeth, realize what has been actually happening.  This book has a high creepy factor and was twisty-turny and fun to read.
